Community Creche

The Devonport Community House Crèche is a teacher led centre providing quality early childhood education and care for children from the local community. The centre is funded by the Ministry of Education ECE subsidy (including ECE 20 hours subsidy), parent donations and fundraising. The creche is situated in a purpose built facility located behind the Devonport Community house. The present facility opened in 1995 after relocating from Wikitoria on Mount Victoria.

The creche is a non-profitable organisation operated under the Community House Umbrella and managed by Tessa Dunleavy. A team of 5 experienced registered Early Childhood teachers work to ensure positive learning outcomes are achieved over the 9 sessions that are held each week. In November 2008, our crèche supervisor, Tessa Dunleavy was credited with a Ministry of Education "Excellence in Teaching - Regional Award".

Current teachers are:
Tessa Dunleavy, Sarah Ganley, Jenny Rees, Lyn Menzies, Lance Cablk, Jaye Stewart.

Teaching support: Jill Quick.

The sessions are structured to provide 1 session for Under 2, 2 sessions for 2 year olds and three sessions for 3 year olds. Three year olds are invited to attend afternoon sessions that are designed to meet the older age group's needs. Entry age into the creche is approximately 18 months of age.

The crèche ensures families have at least one session together in whanau grouping. The majority of children attending creche make the transition around the age of four to the local kindergartens. The teaching team is committed to ongoing self-review and professional development. As a team we aspire to achieving the best learning outcomes for our children and their whanau.

Families are required to enrol children by twelve months of age to secure entry into the creche. All other enquiries will be l isted on an 'Expression of INterest' file and admission to the creche will depend on availability. Please contact the supervisor directly for further information.
